Recently, markets have suffered as a result of the popping of the “tech. bubble.” Through the late 1990s, markets rose to unsustainable levels due to speculation primarily in information technology and telecommunications companies. In the years 2000 through 2002, this fell apart. During this period, hedge funds attracted a great deal of investor attention. Hedge funds based on short-selling performed very well during this retrenchment. This attention fueled considerable growth in the capital allocated to hedge funds, and the low barriers to entry have accommodated significant increase in the number of hedge funds. Ironically, this growth has led to debate about the existence of a bubble in the hedge fund industry. Now, things are not looking so grim for the US market. At the time of this writing, the Federal Reserve is raising interest rates at a measured pace toward a “normal” rate, GDP growth is healthy, and employment seems to be improving. At the same time, energy costs are increasing significantly, and the immense federal budget and trade deficits make increased inflation and an even weaker dollar likely. All things considered, it commonly believed that the US market's ongoing growth rate will be 8-10%.
